FOTD Smokey Blues MAC Vex, Copperplate and The Balm Shady Lady Risque Renee Eyeshadows with MAC Sense of Style Kohl Power Liner and MAC High Def Lipstick

Here is a FOTD I played around with before going to work. I wanted to use some of my oldies from MAC and The Balm with the new MAC Kohl Power Liner in Sense of Style from Love Lace. If I wasn’t going to work, I would probably go heavier on the liner to so off the steely blue colour because using this colour thinly and sparingly just doesn’t do it justice!

After suffering from the flu for an entire week that my brother kindly passed to me, I am finally feeling better. I can enjoy my Thanksgiving long weekend (I am Canadian BTW) and play with some items that were launched several weeks ago. Finally I got a chance to play around with the B Greasepaint stick. This is probably the bluest eyeshadow look I have ever tried because I find blues a little hard to work with. Please excuse that scaly patch on my right cheek (your left) as I was nursing a pimple there. It looks gross I know!

The Balm Shady Lady Palette Product Pictures and Swatches

From top left to bottom right: Caught in the Act Courtney, Shameless Shana, Luscious Lani, Jealous Jordana, Risque Renee, Curvy Cami, Jet Setting Jennifer, All About Alex and Easy Wheezie

I really like The Balm’s Shady Lady eye shadows, because the texture is very soft, finely milled and the colours are decently pigmented. The packaging is very sleek and does not take a lot of room in my makeup kit. The texture between all the colours in the collection are very consistent. I can see quite a few eye shadow combinations in this palette for looks going from day to night. I have 5/9 eyeshadows in the palette, but I opted to buy the palette instead of individual shadows because of value. Two of these shadows are also new and are not in the existing single eyeshadow collection: Jet Setting Jennifer and Easy Wheezie.  These eye shadows sell for $23.00 CAD and $18.00 USD full sized individually and the palette sells for $46.00 CAD and $38.00 USD.  At the palette price, I think it is a value purchase because it only cost a little over $5.00 CAD per shadow and you get 9 eye shadows.  In contrast to the full size single eye shadows at 3.4 grams of product these are about the same size as MAC at 1.8 grams for each shadow, but you get 17 grams of  eye shadows for less than $50. All of these shadows can be worn wet or dry.  When wet it gives a nice sheer all over colour or for some of the darker colours, it makes a nice eye liner. I did several FOTD with Shady Lady shadows combined with brands, but stay tuned for a FOTD with all Shady Lady shadows.

From left to right: Caught in the Act Courtney, Shameless Shana, Luscious Lani

Caught in the Act Courtney: This is described as a rich brown with gold sparkle, it has some red undertones to it. The glitter is subtle and I can barely noticed it when I applied it on my eyelids. It is 1 of 2 glittery shades in the palette.  This one initially applies a bit chalky and sheer, but when I as I build the colour up, the chalkiness and sheerness is eliminated.

Shameless Shana: It is deep golden bronzy brown.  It has a metallic sheen to it without, glitter or frost. This colour is one of the most pigmented and applies very buttery smooth. I tried this one as an eyeliner but it comes off too light on my NC 40/NW 35 skin.  I think if you are lighter than a NC 30, this would make a lovely liner colour.

Luscious Lani: A soft, light, icy champagne pink.  This is one of the most lightly pigmented colour in the collection, but with buildable colour.  The texture is very soft and buttery. I like to wear this wet as a brow bone highlight. This would also make a nice wash of all over colour for fair skin girls.

thebalm2

From left to right: Jealous Jordana, Risque Renee, Curvy Cami

Jealous Jordana: This is a shimmery dark emerald green and is very pigmented. I find the colour very similar to MAC Photo Realism Quad in Grey Range.  It is a deep dark green but not as blue and blackened as MAC’s. This can be worn wet as a liner.

Risque Renee: A navy blue with red and blue shimmer that gives off purple undertones. This colour is very multi-facet, depending on what colours you are pairing this with or the light setting the color ranges from gray to blue to purple.  This would be a very lovely liner colour too.  Risque Renee is highly pigmented.

Curvy Cami: This is a frosty pinky plum with flecks of gold glitter.  This is the second shade that is glittery. For some reason their purple eyeshadows are the least pigmented of the bunch.  The texture is also a not as soft as the rest of the Shady Lady shadows. This one swatches very lightly without a primer, but with a primer the colour is easily buildable. Without the primer Curvy Cami is very hard to work with.

thebalm3

From left to right: Jet Setting Jennifer, All About Alex, Easy Wheezie

Jet Setting Jennifer: This is a muted pale gold with gray tones to me and has a shimmery finish to it. This is lightly pigmented with buildable colour and would make an excellent highlighting colour. I think this colour is very similar to MAC Photo Realism quad’s Photo Realism, except this colour is more golden and brighter.

All About Alex: This one swatches as a grayish olive colour with golden shimmer. With the gray tones it almost looks pewter to me but not as silvery. It is close in colour to MAC Photo Realism quad’s Image Maker but All About Alex is more golden and more green while Photo Realism is more gray and muted. This is decently pigmented with buildable colour.

Easy Wheezie: This one shows as a medium gray shimmer without glitter. It also has a icy bluish cast to it.  It is decently pigmented with buildable colour.

The Balm Shady Lady Eyeshadows

I really like The Balm’s Shady Lady eyeshadows because their texture is soft and applies buttery smooth and very blendable. Most of them are decently pigmented and have a long staying power. Their packaging are all very cute, nostalgic and cheeky; however, their packaging is paper and it makes cleaning the container impossible when it gets dirty. All their shadows are at least a little bit shimmery and a few have sparkles in it, but still very wearable for daytime. My only complaints about The Shady Lady eyeshadows are that there are only 12 colours in the collection and they lack variety in different finishes.  You can wear any of these shadows dry or wet.  When I wear these wet it gives a sheer and creamy finish. I especially like to wear it wet for brow bone highlight. The shadows are easily buildable for more intense colour.  You can even wear these wet as eyeliner.   These retail at Sephora for $23.00 CAD and $16.00 USD.  They are more expensive than MAC, but you get 3.4 g (0.12 oz) of product for The Balm versus 1.5 g (0.05 oz) for MAC, that is more than double the product.  Below are my haul of colours along with colour swatches and descriptions.  Stay tuned for a FOTD with The Balm eyeshadows.

I have had these for a while, so they are not as clean and pristine as they could be. Please note that The Balm does not sell individual palette form shadows.  The shadows in the individual palettes used to be testers.

My own haul:

lusciouslaniAbove Luscious Lani

Luscious Lani: A soft, light, icy champagne pink.  This is one of the most lightly pigmented colour in the collection.  I like to wear this wet as a brow bone highlight. This would also make a nice wash of all over colour for fair skin girls.

jtojamieAbove: Just This Once Jamie

Just This Once Jamie: This is a shimmery light dusty lilac and swatches very sheer and light.  This colour is the lightest in pigmentation but goes on smoothly.  I think you would be able to build up the colour. I would highly recommend a primer for this colour.

curviecamiAbove: Curvy Cami

Curvy Cami: This is a pinky plum with flecks of gold glitter.  For some reason their purple eyeshadows are the least pigmented of the bunch.  The texture is also a not as soft as the rest of the Shady Lady shadows. This one swatches very lightly without a primer, but with a primer the colour is easily buildable. I highly suggest a primer for this colour.

mischieviousmarissaAbove: Mischievous Marissa

Mischievous Marissa: This is a golden apricot colour and is very pigmented.  It has a nice sheen to it without being shimmery or frosty or glittery.  This is one of my favourite all over lid colours and I used to wear it all the time when I first purchased it.

racykacyAbove Racy Kacy

Racy Kacy: A deep pinkish bronze with a light shimmer.  This colour is very pigmented.

shamelessshanaAbove Shameless Shana

Shameless Shana: A deep golden bronzy brown.  It has a metallic sheen to it without, glitter or frost. This colour is one of the most pigmented.  I tried this one as an eyeliner but it comes off too light on my NC 40/NW 35 skin.  I think if you are lighter than a NC 30, this would make a lovely liner colour.

jealousjordanaAbove Jealous Jordana

Jealous Jordana: This is a shimmery dark emerald green and  it is very pigmented. Unfortunately, it looks really washed out in this picture, but the colour is very similar to MAC Photo Realism Quad’s Gray Range colour: the deep dark green, except that Jealous Jordan has less blue tones and looks less blackened.  I think this would make a very lovely liner colour when worn wet.

risquereneeAbove Risque Renee

Risque Renee: A navy blue with red and blue shimmer that gives off purple undertones. This colour is very multi-facet, depending on what colours you are pairing this with or the light setting the color ranges from gray to blue to purple.  This would be a very lovely liner colour too.

sexystaceyAbove Sexy Stacey

Sexy Stacey: A deep gun metal gray with shimmer.  In the pan this looks like it has a bluish cast to it but when swatched it is a deep shimmery gray, which is perfect for smokey eye. I like to use this on the outer V of my eyes.  This is the most pigmented colour and I would use a light hand if I am to use it in the daytime.  This could double as a eyeliner.

Unfortunately the pinks and purples are the hardest to capture on film.  I tried my best!
