FOTD Autumn Slavic Princess Look Using Guerlain Tsarina Ombre Éclat 4 Couleurs Palette #406

This is not a Halloween look but I just want to give my FOTD a name. I used the Gurelain Tsarina Palette twice and each time, I was essentially using the same makeup products and colours for almost everything with the same colour placement. The only difference is that I use a different base each time. The above look you see is with a clear sticky waxy base. I find that with a clear and sticky base the colours show up more vibrant and the colors’ tones look more distinctive. However, even with a different base, I still wish the colours are more varied in tone and have more contrast. I still think the colours look too subdued on my skin with a clear wax primer.

This palette was launched in August for their Slavic Beauty Collection. I debated for weeks before picking this up because Guerlain is a pricey line. By the time I decided to buy this Sears, The Bay and Holt Renfrew are all sold out. I spotted this very last one at Sephora. I actually walked away for 30 minutes before getting it, knowing Sephora has a generous return policy, just in case I hate it. This palette was expensive being $62 CAD at Sephora. I definitely did not buy this palette for the value, but it works out to be $15.50 CAD per 1.5 grams of shadow. At $62 it is pretty expensive to put down for one thing in one transaction. I admit I was mesmerized by the Russian princessy packaging and colour. I don’t own any colours like these. These colours run quite warm and it has a spiciness to the colour that makes it perfect for fall. In general, I can wear warm colours, but I think this palette is almost too warm for my complexion.

In the palette the colours are beautiful and looks like they would coordinate together to create a few different looks. The shadows are very soft, finely milled and blendable. They have a beautiful motif on it, which Guerlain refers to as a “champagne” print and was inspired by traditional costumes of Slavic princesses. I find that with my NC37/NW35 skin tone, I am almost too dark for these colours, as all the colours are very close in tone and lack contrast. I wished that there are a proper highlighting colour and crease colour because it would give the colours more dimension upon appliation. The colours look very subdued on my medium skin tone, but I would image that it would be more vibrant on a person with lighter skin tone. Since the colours look subdued on my skin and all the colours are similar in tone, the colours can look a bit muddled together. This makes wearing the proper primer and colour placement critical because it could look like a muddled mess instead of a colourful sunset with a gradient of colours.

When I tried it with a neutral primer (MAC Paint Sublime Nature) the colours look subdued but muddled together. It didn’t do the colours justice. However, when I tried it with a clear wax based primer (Medusa’s Makeup Stick It! Primer) the colours are vibrant and have more dimension. The colours’ tone looks more varied and I can distinctively see each colour. Since I am medium I would need a clear primer but I think for people with fair skin, NC 25 and lighter, they can use a neutral primer. I would highly suggest finishing off your look with black eyeliner and if you are planning to be photographed add on a pair of false lashes because the colours are so warm, it can washed you out in the eyes. Overall I like this palette but I don’t love it. I would also wear eyeshadows from other collections to create more colour contrast, instead of restricting myself to just the 4 colours in the palette. Muted Gold: Swatches on smoothly and pigmented. This colour is like golden butter and would look good all over the lid. It has a light shimmer to it but it is not glittery.

Rust: This looks like a dark bronze with a bit of orange tones. The colour swatches on very smoothly and pigmented. The rust colour is the most pigmented in the palette. It is bronze with shimmer without looking too metallic.

Berry: This colour swatches on slightly sheerer than muted gold and rust. It has a light shimmer to it. I was able to build up the opacity in 2 layers of colour. This colour does not apply well without a primer.

Plum: This colour swatches a little chalky to me and does not apply as well as muted gold, rust or berry. It is the sheerest colour in the palette. I needed to layer on 3-4 layers of colour to achieve pan colour. This colour will not apply well without a primer either.
