Above: Benefit That Gal Brightening Face Primer
I usually don’t use face primers, as I don’t think it is a necessary step in my beauty routine, but I got this as a gift with purchase at the Fine Finds event a few weeks ago, so it wouldn’t hurt that I try it. It was also nice that they were giving away the full size. This would have cost $34 CAD at Shoppers Drug Mart and Sephora. This primer is light pink in colour and smells faintly of strawberries and a bit like medicine. The smell reminded me a little strawberry Halls, if there are such a thing. Although the scent is a bit strange, it didn’t bother me.
You can use this primer by itself or underneath powder or foundation. I have experimented with this primer wearing by itself, with MAC MSF Natural (powder); MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation (Cream); MAC Hyper Real Foundation (Liquid); and MAC MSF Loose Foundation (loose powder foundation). I find the primer makes very little difference in the application or lasting power of my makeup. The difference in the overall appearance of my makeup is also minimal.
The texture of the primer is like a light lotion and it is actually pleasantly moisturizing. When I wore this primer by itself with just concealer and MAC MSF Natural Powder to set the concealer, my skin feels nicely hydrated. I can see that the primer adds a slight radiance in my skin. On clean skin without makeup covering it, the primer gives a pinkish tinge similar to the effect of MAC Strobe Cream, except I find it more hydrating. Also, I did noticed that the primer reduced some of the redness from acne scarring. The only time I find that this primer gives a different appearance to my makeup is when I use it underneath a liquid foundation. While under liquid foundation, it gave me a dewier and more radiant finish. Otherwise, with other types of cover such as creme or loose powder foundations, I didn’t find any difference in the appearance of my skin or makeup. Overall this is a nice product but I find it unnecessary, though I would continue to use the primer occasionally. If you like to use face primers in your routine or you find your skin is dehydrated while wearing makeup, I do recommend you give Benefit That Gal Brightening Face Primer a try.
